The credit union was chartered in 1958 to recognize and serve the unique financial needs of Kirtland AFB's military personnel. As a member-owned financial institution starting with just $50 in assets, the credit union satisfied a need not being met by banking institutions at that time. From these humble beginnings, Kirtland Federal Credit Union has prospered and expanded to include civilian personnel assigned to KAFB, US Reserve Forces, members of the Air and Army National Guard throughout New Mexico, contractors, defense-related Select Employee Groups (SEGs), veterans groups, as well as military retirees. Family members of these eligible beneficiaries are also eligible for membership with KFCU.
Kirtland Federal Credit Union offers a complete line of financial products and services via the Internet, mobile devices, in person at four locations, and over the telephone on a 24/7 basis. As a financial cooperative, our members are both owners and customers. Profits are returned to our members through lower loan rates, higher savings rates, and lower fees.
The credit union is the fourth largest credit union in the state and the largest military credit union in New Mexico. We serve more than 40 thousand members with a team of dedicated employees. The organization has been recognized with several significant awards. It has twice received the U.S. Air Force Credit Union of the Year Award, won the Quality New Mexico Zia Award (presented by the Governor), received the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve's Pro Patria Award (presented by the Adjunct General of the New Mexico Guard), earned two Raddon Financial Group's Crystal Performance Awards, and was recognized in 2013 with the Rust Award for Excellence in Ethical Business Practice by the Samaritan Counseling Center, in cooperation with the UNM Anderson School of Management.
